december 24
so that was a fucking lie
I'll save you the politics but yeah. it is what it is. my goals now are just to get employed and donate to mutual aid.
I got my wish, I haven't been traveling much. went to the mall of america and that was it.
music
ended the year at 320 albums. whew. I'll go straight into the latest highlights. just a reminder that this is just albums I listened to this year, not all came out this year.
here's some of the best:
- The Lemon Twigs - Everything Harmony: I haven't heard the lemon twigs before, so this album was a treat. I feel like 60s revivalist music will more or less nail the sound but not the feeling. the lemon twigs nail the vibe.
- Matana Roberts - Coin Coin Chapter One: Gens de couleur libres: this goes hard. intense social and political commentary complete with screaming. just total controlled chaos. highly recommend.
- Bait Bag - Electric Splash: short and nifty eclectic folk punk EP worth anyone's time.
- Laptop Funeral - something blue: this is very good, very soft. it sounds very personal and intimate.
- MINTTT - Artificial Body Temperature: really cool and experimental, kind of hard to define. sort of like a 10s emo, shoegazey new wavey thing. I like the audio glitches. it really holds the theme together in a way I hadn't heard since elsewhere again.
- Al Tanner Quintet - Happiness Is... Takin' Care of Natural Business... Dig?: some impressive jazz on this. they announce all the performers in the first track which I think is a nice touch. they should all do that.
- The Ar-Kaics - See the World on Fire: bleak noisy folk rock. it sounds like a type of rock that was gaining steam ten years ago, but I still like this a lot. a surface level listen would make someone think it's indie pop for commercials but it's darker than that.
- Haralabos [Harry] Stafylakis - Calibrating Friction: badass instrumental album that goes all over the place sonically in a good way.
- Mega Bog - End of Everything: excellently weird album, great vocals and strange subject matters and a whole naked woman on the cover. if you want an eerily catchy song... the all and everything... the all and everything... THE. ALL. AND EVERYTHING
- TWRP - Digital Nightmare: good funky rock music. blends of all sorts of 70s and 80s blends with digital optimism thrown in that makes it unique thematically. although it's easy to get tired of the vocoding..
- Mary Lattimore - Goodbye, Hotel Arkada: beautiful piece of music. so haunting yet mesmerizing.
- Sophiaaaahjkl;8901 - Toilet Abstraction Tapes: I like their stuff so I was going back into their catalogue to check out some earlier stuff. this is pretty good, it's like someone who listened to aphex twin and decided it wasn't neurodivergent enough.
- Dispirited Spirits - The Redshift Blues: kind of like a middle ground between wintersleep and black midi. cool, shoegazey, eclectic tracks.
- Orgone - Chimera: real good soul, interspaced social commentary with instrumental tracks. it's all great.
- Donato Dozzy - Magda: perfect ambient loops. maybe repetitive for some but I thought it was just right. very chill with just enough dynamics to make it interesting.
- Jeff Tobias - Music from Milky Way Underground: music that makes me feel a type of way. jeff tobias's strange command over a saxophone is always fascinating. some tracks (upbeat) feel jazzy while others feel experimental and strange (I know you, flashbacks). his stuff is just so cool.
- snakez - overexposure: long but cool and interesting chillsynth album that does a lot of different things and pushes boundaries for the genre in every which way. every nostalgic 80s synth sound you can think of makes an appearance on here.
- MGMT - Loss of Life: kind of a psychedelic rock take on singer-songwriter music. it's good.
- MJ Lenderman - Manning Fireworks: not as much as a jam as boat songs but still has that strange modern disaffected lyrical style that I'm enamored with.
- webcage - peer2peer: late to the party but whatever. really good hyperpop that embodies the genre well.
- The Unending Need for Perpetual Motion: big surprise for sure. astrophysics normally does breakcore/edm type stuff but this was an awesome foray into post-punk with darksynth qualities. great album.
- NEGLECT ZERO: decent compilation of a wide variety of homemade ambient electronic. lots of vaporwave and harsher tunes..
- Hot Water Music - Feel the Void: rock album that goes hard. turn the dial is a repeat for me for sure. just sounds great. can't wait to hear the latest one after this. not sure why I had this one on the list and not the newest one but I'll find out soon.
- Atrey - The Collection: first track is definitely the best. lots of 80s revivalist rock music and synth performed really well.
- UTO - When all you want to do is be the fire part of fire: really good and interesting pop with a lot of cool sounds. really neat album.
- Captain KRB - riverhouse: videogamey synth tracks with trap beats. pretty good, much better than the last album. lots of improvement on production.
- Angel Brügger - First Time: good for stormy minds in the first half and the second half makes it all science fictiony. pretty cool noise drone.
- Babe, Terror - Pescadou Gualapagouse: really cool and long jazzy track.
- Cosmic Link - Cosmic Link: dope and catchy r&b with some electronic influences. let it go is a bop.
- Boards of Canada - Geogaddi :one of those albums that listening to for the first time made me realize why things made later sound the way they do. profoundly influential.
- Adrianne Lenker - Bright Future: brilliant folk album. really like her style. such a creative powerhouse to be doing solo stuff and working with big thief.
- Lizzie No - Halfsies: wonderfully written and emotional album full of love songs from several different unconventional angles. really good.
- Tudor Acid - Discarded Shadows: excellent techno album. drums are so good and crunchy. reminds me of pilotredsky somewhat..
- Hemlocke Springs - going... going... GONE!: nifty little tunes that you can hear the love of music through. lots of 80s synthpop influence in the best ways.
and, why not, some disappointments. t h a t i s n o t t o s a y that they are bad, I just didn't like them as much. basically this is albums from artists I liked already but wasn't into their new thing.
- I DON'T KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME - GLOOM DIVISION: this is, thematically and sonically, two door cinema club. it's very stuck in 2012. great if you're looking for that kind of sound..
- girl in red - I'M DOING IT AGAIN BABY!: I'm glad she stuck with the toxic lesbian romance plot. I didn't like it that much, mostly because I'm not the biggest pop fiend. the studio let her have too much fun on some points. still, I respect it..
- CHANCE デラソウル - See You Soon: accidentally skipped the one before this but overall this was too repetitive for me. CHANCE is a legend but the pitched up vocals is starting to wear on me. not their best work, but a bittersweet ending all the same... is what I WOULD have said and what I wrote down when I listened to it, but CHANCE returned shortly after. rejoice!
- SHEER MAG - Playing Favorites: backloaded album. it's good, but I don't like it thematically except near the end where they start trying new stuff and it sounds cool. might go harder live.
- STRFKR - Parallel Realms: long album with not a lot of variety. average neo-psych. sounds like a bunch of outtakes put on an album.
- CHANCE デラソウル - In Media Rez: about the same I thought about See You Soon.
- Windows96 - 19999: this one makes a lot of use of vocal synthesis which doesn't always fit but otherwise this is a better album than the last one. tries a lot more new things. I like the direction their stuff is going though.
- Bleachers - Bleachers: jack antonoff made a thing without turning the reverb slider all the way up but it still wasn't that good. it's fine sonically, but all the songs are just generic love pop songs.
and for fun, albums from people I don't listen to that I get the hype about but don't like:
- Geese - 3D Country: cool album. runs the gamut of folk styles until it runs out and starts screaming. vocals are a bit too zany for me though. I felt like it was trying to go for a maximalist country vibe through vocals only and not instrumentation. it was good but didn't always match the vibe of the vocals. vocals.
- Jane Remover - Census Designated: I just don't like how it sounds. the vocal style takes me out of it.
- julie - my anti-aircraft friend: it's fine. I'm not as big of a juliehead as many others unfortunately. also I have been reading it as "anti-aircraft girlfriend" this whole time.
music is good and going in a good direction overall. that's my professional opinion. you're welcome.
video games
feels like i played more this time around. struggling to find an idler game that keeps my interest. not exactly looking for an actual idle game, but a game that lets me watch youtube videos while doing semi intellectual tasks.
- grand theft auto V: did some idling, flying around and did the daily spin for a couple weeks before remembering how awful and dated the game is in general and stopping.
- balatro: got some time out of this but ultimately hit a wall (pun very intended) where luck mattered a lot more and that just isn't fun to me. restarting runs over and over for a good first tag also blows. I don't like gambling I just like winning unfortunately.
- still on the helldivers 2 grind. they added the illuminate and they're fun to play with. the flying guys are frustrating and the walkers took some time getting used to but I'm hoping they're fleshed out and rebalanced some more. they added a car so that's awesome.
- really like how ATLYSS plays, sounds, and *ahem* looks. rare early access win honestly, and the fact that it's multiplayer is a bonus, too.
- I don't fucking know castlevania I don't know what all these stupid secrets in vampire survivors are supposed to be or do. help.
- bahnsen knights was fine. the gameplay segments were frustrating and I wasn't really curious enough to get all the scenes.
- definitely falling off of lethal company more and more. whenever I play I just stay on the ship and metaphorically look at my phone while opening doors and turning off turrets.
- had a good time with class of '09. it's soooo edgy and probably won't hold up on another playthrough but it's so in your face that it's funny.
- WEBFISHING was a big star wasn't it? it's enjoyable. nice and relaxing multiplayer chatroom where you can move around and fish.
- it looks like I didn't mention teardown last time. it's a great game with a singleplayer that has a great difficulty curve that balances giving you new toys with new environments to use them in. I don't like the island section that much but I thought it was excellent. didn't mess around with mods too much because I couldn't get the popular ones to do what I wanted and the game flails when you destroy to many things. ironically.
- was always a little interested in Warsim: the realm of aslona but ultimately the quirky ascii character designs could not overcome the tedious interface. yes I knew that going in. tried it anyway.
- played some black ops 3 zombies with some people and as soon as we attempted a secret I remembered just how tedious it is. kiting around a crawler for 30 minutes while your buddy finds all the buttons and shit to push just to watch something that's no different than watching it on youtube is not fun at all and it's amazing that we've all been conned into thinking it is
- actually played dungeons and degenerate gamblers before playing balatro. it was fun for a bit but ran into the same pitfalls. getting bad decks is actually worse in this one. feels like it could've been fun but isn't. compared to balatro:
- I liked being able to altf4 to restart a round lol
- it's easier to get decks that kill but restarting is more tedious
- made me appreciate that balatro doesn't have an overt narrative
- more cards synergize
- I was so proud of myself for beating the gnorp apologue in 50 nonstop hours (it's an idle game so that's not a big deal) only to read the reviews and see people talk about beating it in 6. man.
- tried deadlock. not for me.
film
my partners having me watch all the star wars movies. episode 2 into 3 has so much whiplash. like all of 2 is anakin saying weird fucked up shit to padme while she looks completely horrified and then into 3 she's pregnant with his child and in love and all that??? what the hell. ep3 might be self-contained, idk. it's not great but feels like the other movies in the trilogy hold it back even more.
on the other hand, it's incredible how good the empire strikes back is. what a great movie just all around. it's funny though cause you wouldn't expect yoda to be such a shithead from the prequels.
I watched the original trilogy and 3 when I was much younger (on that sweet vhs box set).
I watched the sequel trilogy as it came out and I was excited but 9 really threw everything in the garbage. I swore off star wars stuff for a long time, but ended up watching andor and that was good. although shows these days really pad the runtime. do more with less time PLEASE.
28 days later reminded me of poltergeist in it being a movie subversive in the genre that influenced things later but not always in a good way. like poltergeist almost has the "crazy wife who can't convince anybody the ghost is real but subverts it. 28 days later isn't a perfect movie but it does a lot better than later zombie movies at showing the beauty of humanity. sometimes zombie movies are just all grit all the time and it's depressing
Minecraft but I survive in PARKOUR CIVILIZATION is mesmerizing but exhausting. it's a shonen with all the tropes exacerbated by it basically being a tiktok compilation. it's better than average but the bar is low for minecraft content so it's notable just for being a thing with a narrative. I know you were dying to hear my opinion on this.
videos
uhhhhhhh
45 min+ videos
- must watch urbanism video about why homelessness doesn't have to happen and the reasons behind it Your Comprehensive Guide to Homelessness Grift (Housing Part 2). has some annoying jokes.
- lextorias can be a bit pretentious so I was worred about Why is Adult Animation So Far Behind? but it ended up being pretty level. lots of background, lots of little tangents that aren't expressly related.
- reccollect's Achieving the Impossible on CoD's Most Obscure Zombies is too long for what it is. it's a commentated let's play on four levels on a zombies mode on the DS. lots of classic call of duty banter.
- idyl's I Played Every Blizzard Game Ever Made is a pretty good video that doesn't waste a lot of time. it's sort of a comprehensive history of blizzard games up until this point.
- RTGame's I've Not Seen South Park. Let's Play All of South Park: The Stick of Truth is a good alternative to playing the game.
- watch a guy awkwardly walk around town: I Tried North Dakota's Impossible Scavanger Hunt.
- How The FBI Invented Eco-Terrorism is a very dry, very radical, very amateur video about the government fucking over environmentalists. lots of very long quote reads with some mistakes not edited out. good video otherwise for being conprehensive and enraging.
- The Sociology Iceberg Explained is not terribly dense but it's still good.
- I Watched Every Razzie Worst Picture Winner is a pretty fun video that doubles as a wild trip through contemporary film history. can be hard to watch in some spots due to the content.
- yennik arual's video Abt The Ad in Barbie goes very deep in theory concepts. script is a bit clunky but it's a good video. avoids using the ad as a single wedge that decides whether the movie is good or not which is nice. tasty nuance.
- Skip Intro's video on the kids show with cop dogs is good, but if you've seen anti police content you've seen most of it already except the graphic descriptions of police dogs hurting people and how the police uses the dogs as marketing tools.
- another reccollect video, this time about monster energy. pure information, hardly any editorializing.
- majuular's Ultima VI video continues the trend of quality documentaries about specific subjects, improved with funnier jokes.
- moon channel's Who Exactly Controls Pokemon, Anyway? video goes into a lot of detail but at the end of the day the answer to the title is nintendo.
- he also posits in A Lawyer Explains Nintendo v. Palworld that nintendo's goal isn't to shut down palworld as much as it is to defend against some sort of corporate attack from sony. it's an interesting perspective although I try to take his videos with a grain of salt despite how reasonable he can sound.
- also How Realistic is Fallout New Vegas: Old World Blues is his most critical video yet of america. goes into a LOT of detail of terrible shit the US government has done to its people.
- wild stuff, the way Aurora Migrant Gang 'Takeover' investigates the title subject shows how a little media manipulation can go a long way in stoking racial tensions so that nobody pays attention to your shitty apartment upkeep.
- decent izzzyzzz video but the Dress to Impress Horror ARG itself is so stupid that I couldn't stand to finish the video. it's so obvious they just made it up as they went along.
- I like graeldon's stuff but longer form videos really bring out his scripting and narration quirks and not always in a good way.
- MORE POKEMON INFORMATION
- An in-depth look at Romance in video games kind of runs out of points in the first hour and spends the rest of the video reiterating them but he's not a bad narrator and the subject is interesting.
- mainely mandy's My Mom is Dead (To Me) is a good but emotionally laborious video. good if you want to feel validated about hating your parents.
- redlyne makes an even better Exploring Forgotten Minecraft Servers video
- joey engelman tells story after story of what happened behind TV Shows Canceled Before One Episode.
- really like f.d. signifier's take in Edglord Movies Finally BROKE ME!!! where he says that we need more media that describes what kind of world we want to be in instead of so much dystopian nightmare fuel, no matter how "satirical" it is. good video.
- I thought the Summoning Salt Simpson's hit and run video was light on content. it basically followed one guy the whole time and leaves interesting paths untraveled.
- The Complete Implosion of Riverdale is a decent video but it's relentless with eyepatch wolf tropes.
- kate alexandra follows up her banger with The Endless Reinvention of Greek Mythology, a more broad look about how greek influence is used for various ends and to the detriment of the greek people.
- found a cozy wilderness exploration video, We Found a Desert Maze Guarding an Ancient Treasure. positive vibes throughout.
- shaun returning to form in Stellar Blade: The Fake Outrage, a classic takedown of grifters and weirdos online.
- didn't finish The State of FireRed & LeafGreen Glitches in 2024 is INSANE because it's all arbitrary code execution. it's a good video but it's basically showcasing the same kind of bug over and over in different ways. although it's incredible that it is possible in the first place. even does it on original hardware.
- sarah z's The Narcissist Scare is a great takedown of the hysteria surrounding narcissists.
- another banger from bobbybroccoli The Men Who Promised the Impossible: Unlimited Energy. just when you think it's over there's another part and more drama.
shorter videos that I liked
- Relatability Isn't Representation and That's Okay is a very good takedown of representation trolls.
- jack saint killing it with the youtube metacommentary. The Olsen Problem brings up a lot of legitimate criticisms of dan's james rolfe video and problems inherent to video essays about living people in general.
- Black Tracks and the Finnish Transformers Saga is a wild ride from start to finish.
- planet clue goes into a great mini history of dance pads in the great dance pad war of the early 2000s.
- less sensational and more detailed look at the cybertruck in Car Mechanic Reviews The Tesla Cybertruck. the first half makes you think he's going to be overly positive but once he gets into the negatives he really gets into it.
- I agree with You DON'T Need a Backlog but it could've been half as long. I also agree with her Reviewer Brain video. I think i've talked about it before that caveating everything to proactively respond to people already acting in bad faith is annoying for your good faith listener but she puts it in better terms.
- despite being stupid the vibes are immaculate. I Tested Every SOFTLOCK in Pokemon does the overdramatization of video game quirks that creepypasta videos do but in such an absurdly scripted, narrated, and soundtracked way that it's perfect. great video.
- incredible achievement in crafting a narrative intertwined with a documentary in kaptainkristan's The 9 Cursed Swords of Norse Mythology.
- styropro once again gritting everyone's teeth by making overpowered microwaves and being uncomfortably close to them. god I love him.
- catchy title but How can I Mourn Mario when he's still Alive is an excellent piece of contemporary art that respects how growing up with video games would affect someone emotionally.
- another cool video by ethereal worlds Survival Horror's Pulp Fantasy Origins goes into the literary influences on survival horror.
if you have to have text corrections for your voiceover like 5 or more times in your 30 minute video maybe it's time for a rerecord. that's my complaint for this update.
also defunctland's new video was good. secret base REFORM! trilogy was good. I haven't listed any iron pineapple videos because they are generically good and interesting, but also I've been skipping the longer segments in them. he's had legit 30 minute playthroughs of games in his videos.
I thought redlettermedia's paranormal investigation thing was okay. sort of gets to the same conclusion that the shows they're parodying do ("whooo knooooows"). i'm also just not a big fan of their stuff although I appreciate its impact and influence.
I don't have any specific recommendations but trash discourse popped up recently and made some very good videos on some much needed areas. if you were confused and put off by philosophytube's tangent in that one video about why times square was better when it was a red light district, Public Sex: A History and Defense goes into a lot more detail on the subject.
other
ughhh that was a lot. this took a long time. life is changing fast so idk if there will be another in a while. hopefully it stops changing soon but we'll see. i'm all out of juice for now.
august 22
as much as id like an infinitely scrolling website, i finally made a page 2. you can see past entries here.
what a month, eh?
sir, it's still august
thats been the vibe this month. what a wreck. I thought june was bad. basically been traveling back home and around. went on a cruise. went home to pack for way too long. moving again in a momth. it's not ideal for updating websites. but here I am
music
half the albums on my favorites list has been added in the past 60 days, so either my interest isn't actually waning or my standards are a lot lower. either is fine.
- Karine Polwart - Seek the Light: really good spoken word. only 4 songs long but delivers a lot emotionally. highly recommend.
- Siouxsie and the Banshees - The Scream: insane how influential this band is. now I know why is shoegaze, why is indie, why is emo, why is everything underground. if you listen to indie and care about its history, this is a must.
- Soema Montenegro - CIRCULO RADIANTE: very good spanish music. sweet and folky. I don't know what they're saying but I think I can feel it.
- The Beatles - Let It Be: wow let it be really is the only banger here huh.
- Willi Carlisle - Critterland: very raw lyrics. excellent album. a real honest look into rural america (/california).
- Windows96 - One Hundred Mornings: this is an iconic album with an iconic look and feel to it, but on relisten I didn't get the same impact. which is to say that he's really got better over time. but that title, that album cover, they just give vibes that are frozen in time. in a good way. one hundred mornings....
- hey, nothing - We're Starting to Look Like Each Other: very good folk rock. pretty eclectic.
- Temple of Angels - Endless Pursuit: good shoegaze. nice to listen to. sounds like a time capsule from 2010s indie in a very good way.
- Kirin J Callinan - If I Could Sing: frontloaded with bangers, but gets slow and sappy toward the end in a way I don't really like.
- Elton John - Caribou: sounds like tumblr music. will not elaborate. reblog.
- Rezzett - Rezzett LP: really cool and crunchy idm.
- Czerwone Gitary - Czerwone Gitary 2: really good polish rock. it's like a whole different take on 60s pop rock. recommend.
- Ruth Anderson & Annea Lockwood - Tête-à-tête: aside from the weird frequency sweep of a first track, it's very sweet and I'm better for have listened to it. sapphic romance album. really recommend the writeup on bandcamp as well.
- US Golf 95 - [Playstation] jungle.psx: title does not lie. enjoyable.
- Jim Wake & Sleepwalker - Preaching to the Perverted: really good soul. black midi vocal style works way better with this instrumental. money in my pocket does loudness better than most other music ive heard--it makes you feel like you're at the party.
- Drayton Farley - Twenty on High: good country. pretty standard instrumentation and vocals, but there's a sort of concept album thing going on about a battle of depression over a few songs, which I think is done well.
- Dorian Electra - Fanfare: look, I just don't like nu metal. i'm fine with the revival. 100 gecs did it well, but nobody else is really doing it well. plus it's not as sexy as their other stuff.
- Sunglaciers - Regular Nature: kind of like if king gizzard did weed instead of acid. lots of different styles of psychedelic rock. fun to listen to.
- Filmmaker - Hollywood Cult: more awesome darksynth with your favorite anarchist producer. isn't falling into the trap of other synth producers of making the same stuff over and over, filmmaker is always innovating and trying new sounds within the synth genre.
- DIM - Parachrism: progressive dungeon synth, if there were such a thing. sounds like a heroic quest where each song is a different challenge. good stuff.
- Aldrch - would you like to go out?: excellent chiptune-infused pop punk. sort of like hey, ily.
- Traveler - Prequel to Madness: more badass power metal from canada. great listen.
- Hello Meteor - Shadow Boundaries: more excellent ambient vaporwave. I don't even know if it's still vaporwave anymore, the sample choice lacks the 80s aesthetic. definitely not a bad thing. regardless, cool worldbuilding.
- Sferro x Tommy '86 - Remote Communications: groovin' synthy vaporwave. more like emotion engine.
- Ithildin - Arda's Herbarium: A Musical Guide to the Mystical Garden of Middle-Earth and Stranger Places - Vol. I: I'm not a lotr nerd but this was really good fantasy ambient synth. I'm going to listen to all of these.
- ParadymCoast - Experience: very hello meteor in a good way. sort of a light ambient chiptune ep.
- Crisis Sigil - God Cum Poltergeist: God Cum Poltergeist: definitely feels like a followup to the other album. it's your classic screaming ada rook goodness, this time more consistent and somehow better.
- La La Lars - La La Lars IV: feels like idm for jazz. very htoughtful but playful.
- Metallica - Master of Puppets: really good and I can see why it's influential but I can't get over the guitar sometimes sounding like squeaky furniture.
- GRIN - Hush: really good death metal.
- meurtrières - RONDE DE NUIT: some great french metal. sometimes I feel like people do the classics better these days than the classics did.
- Hotel Pools - Evenings 夕暮れ Vol. 1 : good chillsynth. add this to your playlists.
- acloudyskye - There Must Be Something Here: much of the same sound as the last one but shorter instrumentals and more accessible. I liked it about the same as What Do You Want, which is to say I liked it a lot.
- Parsnip - Behold: bandcamp really wanted everyone to listen to this. they were on three articles. to parsnip's credit, though, you can't get more jangle pop than this.
- Winged Wheel - Big Hotel: very soft shoegaze. like the softest shoegaze can get. some cool and interesting sounds in it too.
- King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - The Silver Cord: a love letter to 70s prog synth. good stuff.
- Allie X - Girl With No Face: oh it's synth time for real now. synth was already a thing but this is SYNTH. we're deeper into the 80's revivalism than I ever thought you could get. this isn't your chvrches synthpop. great album, sounds great.
- Pacing - Real poetry is always about plants and birds and trees and the animals and milk and honey breathing in the pink but real life is behind a screen : quriky but in a good way. funny writing with some catchy bits here and there. relatable.
- Brian Eno - Ambient 1: Music for Airports: this is gas. I feel like if I wasn't thinking straight I would call this boring, but this was some of the most interesting and contemplative ambient I've ever heard. no wonder it's so influential.
- Chappell Roan - The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess: super good pop bangers. so many catchy hooks. so horny... a must-listen for sure. I don't like slow songs but at least it kept it varied here. usually a pop album with slow songs makes them all sound the same like olivia rodrigo but they're all different styles here so it's nice.
- Hello Meteor - Said Ghosts: more good vaporwave. this one has talking. lots of worldbuilding.
- Weird Al Yankovich - Polka Party: not the best one so far. didn't really know which songs he was parodying on this which didn't help. christmas at ground zero is a great christmas song thouugh.
- Nailah Hunter - Lovegaze: very pretty and low and slow soul.
- standards - Fruit Galaxy: okay I think I figured it out. it's the guitar. the guitar makes the same six or so noises across every album and every song and it's distracting even when everything else is good.
- Britti - Hello, I'm Britti.: awesome fusion of folk and soul. good lyrics and lots of fun.
- Billie Eilish - HIT ME HARD AND SOFT: really great. more horny pop. very contemplative and personal.
- Charli XCX - brat: I appreciate the aesthetic and cultural impact but I have never been into her music, including this. just not into the club and hyperpoppiness of it.
- Gorillaz - Plastic Beach: this was a cool experience. feels ahead of its time.
- Frog - GROG: some really cool indie rock. great melodies in here.
- zweihandr - zweihandr: ambitious. if you like the more obscure internet genres you'll like this. what is obscurity now anyways.
- Dan Mason - Florescence: very relaxing, very soft vocal vaporwave. really good stuff. hyacinths is such a bop.
- glass beach - plastic death: no skips on this one. it's a really good, varied, and interesting album. I didn't really like the first glass beach album so I was surprised to like this one a lot more.
whew! that was a lot. although I have a bit more to say
brat, the rise and fall of a midwest princess, girl with no face, hit me hard and soft all coming out this and last year felt significant to me. at the time that I heard the rise and fall of a midwest princess, I felt really hopeless about the political situation in america, and all these albums (yeah i know charli and allie x aren't american) felt like a final shout, whether cynically or not, to queerness being in the public eye before a maniacal dictator comes into office and quashes it.
the albums felt significant in that way, like getting the word out before it becomes illegal. I know this all sounds dramatic, but I felt pretty hopeless. a lot of people did. but then biden dropped out and things felt good again. like we actually have a chance now. I'm allowing myself to feel hopeful, although I'm still cautiously optimistic. democrats are known for dropping the ball, trying to be honorable and all that shit. just hoping it doesn't happen.
also another thing. I just happened to listen to kiss me more while this was going and realized that black queer women have been pioneering horny and explicit music for years even in the mainstream, but some white women do it and suddenly it's a big deal. not to minimize anything but I can see why someone wouldn't be impressed with chappell roan's success.
anyway.
video games
other than helldivers 2, I've been in a big gaming slump. I bought a bunch of games, tried some, kept playing older games for something to do while watching youtube. you know the drill.
SWORDCAR looked fun from the iron pineapple video, but it wasn't really what I expected. I think it could be cool and fun, but I got stuck at a really early boss with no way to tell how to avoid attacks from it. should've waited for it to come out of early access.
personally was hoping for a more simcade driving experience but with battles. forza style. yeah yeah I know. still I think that would be cool, to manage your physics and all that
- played rollerdome for 30 minutes. camera sucks. never liked score-based games. wouldn't let me refund. oh well.
- back to playing my favorite overpowered mod civ in civ 5 as something to do while idling and watching videos. pretty sure I'm getting bored of it again though
- did some hades runs to idle as well. I'm at heat 15 with some weapons. almost got to the first statue, but got in a losing streak and felt too depressed about it to continue. had a very satisfying aspect of hera run though. festive fog + chill with the 40% dual debuff damage boost makes for some great burst. I just like doing damage.
- me and my partner are playing civ6 together which is a lot of fun. I got bored of stardew after I beat it so this is our new together game which is nice cause I don't have to worry about inventory management. I really like getting a strong economy. doing the gold per cities with your religion gets soo much money, although the game seemed to have balanced away money by making units sooo expensive even if you have a ton of money. actually pretty decent to play on steam deck.
- still on that forza grind. still not buying those dlcs until they're on sale. although I have also done a condition where I'll get them if I get a steam gift card, but only if my forza buddy gets them too. wouldn't feel fair and I don't care that much about the car pack cars to have them alone.
- finally got planet coaster. wow this looks complicated. can't believe I have to treat it like an actual sim and not an easily exploitable victory simulator. haven't played it that much but I'm slowly eating at it.
- oh I guess pokemon go counts as a video game. I've been playing it a LOT, doing all the quests and stuff. always catching shit. always on that damn phone. I managed to do the daily pokestop spins for MONTHS but I think I'm going to calm down on that. the stress of running around the neighborhood is getting to me. I got accosted the other day, and even though I just brushed it off and kept walking, it wasn't very fun. much easier when I lived on one...
- trying to unlock shit in vampire survivors. some of these playable characters are very hard to deal with. I usually try to do it without looking things up but sometimes the ingame hints are way too opaque.
- really falling off lethal company but it's all my friends want to play. zeekerss took away those fucking foxes. god that was a stupid creature. I'm already annoyed enough at those birds on the canyon map (that they will NOT stop sending us to), and then zeekerss just ads a fox that spawncamps you. he took it away though so I guess I'm still in it for now. I just like hanging out in the ship and turning off turrets and monitoring. nobody wants to get walkie talkies to talk to me though.
my partner is playing through the fallout games. like started on 1. before last year the only games she played were the sims and various mobile games, but she beat fallout 1 on her own (while looking stuff up but who doesn't need to do that?). very proud of her. fallout 1 intimidates even the most hardcore gamers. she's on 3 now. can't wait to show her hbomberguy's video.
helldivers 2 is very much a best friend game right now. if you play it with me on my schedule then we're best friends. it has just enough pushback to be challenging but not overwhelming. lots of difficulty options even so. although 6 feels harder than 7 some days. lovely game. kind of wish it still had a million active players but as long as we can do those orders I'm okay.
videos
I tried doing this in normal chronilogical order but youtube history tab is not agreeing with my quick scroll speed. so I'm doing it reverse again.
- on the plane I watched Achieving the Impossible on CoD's Most Obscure Zombies. it's a decent video. the editing falls off though, I wanted his floating head the whole time. could've been shorter. glorified let's play.
- another armchair history by lextorias in Why is Adult Animation So Far Behind?. good video on why animation is like this now, with a focus on anime and western animation.
- this is the first one I came across but Your Comprehensive Guide to Homelessness Grift (Housing Part 2) and Gentrification is a distraction (Housing Part 1) are both banger videos by street sweeper about housing policy. both are very comprehensive. must watch for anyone who cares about politics imo.
- I'm What the Culture Feeling is a very good and super comprehensive video about the kendrick/drake beef. I would say it's the only one you need to watch, but todd in the shadows also has a good video on it that goes in an even different direction.
- noodle and friend's The BEST Forgotten Racing Games is a nice retrospective on an obscure game series and a history of the company that made it.
- huge bible school vibes from the narrator but The Weird Al Show: An Unnecessarily Deep Dive into a Forgotten Cult Classic - Video Essay is a good video about a show I didn't know existed.
- another redlyne banger, Cults in Online Games humorously investigates some alleged cults online.
- my favorite soundfont cover artist for the better part of a year has been unpragmatic covers, and their The Making of a RuneScape Soundfont Cover video showcases just how much knowledge, respect, and passion they have for music, and it's a miracle that they put that into runescape soundfont covers of all things. godspeed.
- I analyzed 177 supernatural shows and this is the scariest state is a fun video by a small book tuber that goes through a bunch of shows and plots where they're from.
- an important video in Racist Sundown Towns are mostly in the Midwest…not the South, that basically talks about the title and why it works out that way.
- I resonate a lot with raymundo 2112's Quit saying "Un-alive".. I wish creators would have some respect for the subjects they talk about and stop using this playground shit. we literally have euphemisms, "passed away," etc. if I killed myself and somebody described my "sewerslide" I would literally come back to life and bring them back with me. otherwise, I resonate less with the conspiratorial angle of this being controlled or whatever. it sucks that corporations are controlling speech in these ways but there needs to be more evidence for it instead of a bunch of tubers just blindly believing what other people say and censoring "die" in their videos. god.
- Why Western Designs Fail in Developing Countries is a very good and necessary video that talks about how charities and influencer types will have ideas that look good on paper, but generally go very wrong because they don't take into account the actual people they're serving.
- another banger by ethereal worlds, The Ancient Weebs of the Amiga Scene is a great video that goes into more ancient internet subcultures. the audio is bad but at least it has subtitles.
- cheyenne lin's The Parents Are Alt-Right: The Conservative Anti-school Iceberg is refreshing in how opinionating she is in it. I don't like how centrist her take on homeschooling is but the video is good otherwise.
- minimme continues the james bond game series in The first 007 game on PS1, a fun video about a game that sucks, and why it ended up sucking. even includes some developer interviews.
- whistlindiesel finally gets out his cybertruck duability test. it says #1 in the title but he ain't getting that thing back. turns out the cybertruck is very good at things that don't matter and terrible at anything that does. what a car.
- wickedwiz misses with What Went Wrong? - Garten of BanBan. clunky script. could've been half as long. post-mortem on a game series that hasn't even died yet. 1.4M views don't lie tho, get that bag ig.
- decent gaming vlog by smudgebap in understanding SONIC THE HEDGEHOG as an outsider. nothing too spicy in terms of takes, doesn't get into the 3D games. now that would be something to see.
- CHUPPL knocks it out of the park again with Where Online Scams Come From. it might feel like it starts off weak but it gets better, way better.
- li speaks makes a banger with A Comprehensive Categorization of Reddit Ragebait. I used to use reddit a lot, I feel like I've seen a dozen of every single one of these categories (other than the religious ones for some reason). super validating as someone who considered a lot of those subreddits to be full of fake stories.
- if you haven't watched Fabio and the Goose, do yourself a favor. absolute killer video.
- defunctland continues to fail to miss with another excellently written video about Kid Cities, something every gmod darkrper would've killed to be a part of.
- moon channel makes a monster deep dive in Kawaii: Anime, Propaganda, and Soft Power Politics., a video that goes deep into japan's perception abroad and how it has used it to its advantage. the comments talk about how actually america is the #1 soft power country but that misses the point.
- The Weirdest and Most Obscure Side of the Internet is a fast-paced list video by floodware that doesn't dig deep into any particular entry, but is still interesting either way. there's a let's play at the end.
- I Don't Know James Rolfe is another great video by folding ideas that dispells the notions of james rolfe being some kind of creative genius for his show, along with having its own narratives and themes about creativity and stuff.
- I've been going through majuular's ultima restrospectives, the lastest being the one on Ultima V, and it's been a treat. they are well-made, well-written documentaries on the development and philosophy behind the most influential games in history.
- important, if clunkily scripted, video about Desert Level Music vs Actual Middle-Eastern Music. goes really deep into how embarrassingly off the mark westerners portray middle eastern music. essential for anyone who wants to make art based in other cultural regions.
- The Bizarre World of Fake Video Games is a recommendation for a book that's probably better read than experienced through supereyepatch wolf. the first hour twenty is him listing some fake video games and horror twist fanart of existing video games. didn't like this one much.
- The Abyss of the Rabbit Hole Iceberg is decent noise. more of a general horror iceberg but it's competent.
I threw some shorter videos in there that I liked too since I'm not watching that many long videos these days
uhhh I don't have a lot of commentary or hot takes on greater trends right now. vinny's stream of kinitopet is more entertaining than nexpo's video.
misc
life has been really turmultulous lately, emotionally and financially. it's just one thing after another. you know how it is. been feeling really down lately, and it's been affecting my plans for being creative and all that.
I went on a cruise. I don't think I have enough to say about it for an article. it was cool, I liked it a lot. always have critiques but I'll say that the main one is that my partner was right in that it wasn't really "traveling" no matter what ports you go to, since they're all the same unless you do a LOT of planning and preparation. I'm willing to do that next time though.
went back to florida for way too long. we tried to drive 24 straight hours by swapping shifts, which worked, but the recovery time from that is like two days. we recompensed that florida is awful and we never want to go back, so hopefully the move to washington is smooth.
I'll have an article on tacoma up at some point. I made a tier list of all the places we went to, which overall wasn't a lot, but you know. gotta make content. but I'm hungry right now lol.
