here's a page where I will document youtubers. probably ones I like. maybe I'll post ones I don't like, or maybe I'll keep that to reviews.
primitive technology is a channel where he makes stuff out of nothing but the earth and tells you about it in the captions. you have to turn captions on to get live directions. just a really cool project.
danooct1 makes videos on primarily retro viruses with wacky effects. he goes into detail on how they work in a way that's pretty easy to understand in my opinion.
ahoy makes slow paced and visually distinct minidocs about various topics, mainly firearms and what they represent as it pertains to video games. they can be pretty thorough, if succinct.
favorite video: POLYBIUS - The Video Game That Doesn't Exist, an excellent takedown of the POLYBIUS myth.
charborg is a comedy gaming youtuber who also streams. his videos are uniquely funny, with an absurd and sometimes surreal sense of humor. he also makes music under charbeats and has a stream clips channel at CHRBRG. his music has a deep industrial style that I enjoy quite a bit.
my favorite video: ken tucky robs the world
gaming historian makes excellent minidocs (and sometimes full documentaries) on various video game topics. they're very well made and well researched.
if you're on neocities, you've probably heard of LGR. but did you know that LGR has one of the best produced food channels online? he doesn't upload very often.
the description, "visual love letters," is enough to describe this channel. short videos with slick editing detailing how specific media achieved its effects. he doesn't upload very often, but when he does, it's an event.
ensemble comedy channel with humorous editing. good for some ridiculous laughs, watching a group of friends have fun.
humorous reload animations created by a guy who actually makes reload animations professionally.
video essays about politics from a leftist point of view. pretty good and smug response videos to chuds.
thorough minidocumentarian with slowly increasing production value. some of his videos haven't aged spectacularly well, but the ones on creepy historical stuff are still good. might be dry to some. he likes to cameo in other people's content.
my favorite video: TempleOS | Down the Rabbit Hole
defunctland is a youtube darling. his videos cover amusement park rides and old shows, with more socioeconomic and cultural context than even traditional documentaries. some of his videos start with seemingly unrelated facts that he works in brilliantly into the main subject. peak content.
my favorite video: Dufunctland: The Bizarre Garfield Dark Ride. this one should be a good introduction to his style and sense of humor, and what he's willing to cover.
I like his approach and his takes. his videos start on a subject and then broaden to reach a greater truth, like it starts at the subject and then comes back around to talk about how the subject is the result of the conditions it started in. does that make sense?
my favorite video: CTRL+ALT+DEL | SLA:3 is an excellent example of this. maybe a little too artsy or pretentious to some, but it's one of my favorite videos.
thorough and well produced takedowns of various topics. he's got a knack for rhetoric that's very effective at dismantling scams. his video on NFTs basically singlehandedly destroyed the value of the concept overnight.
my favorite video: The Nostalgia Critic and The Wall is a terrific and biting takedown of Nostalgia Critic's The Wall.
a really neat channel that discusses how problematic tropes in media can affect how we treat other people. the videos are full of examples, which is cool cause you don't feel like you're crazy for thinking something's weirdly prolific.
insane person who does dangerous things with photons, while exposing how unnervingly easy it is to acquire dangerous lasers. he's safe about it but I am worried.
one of my favorite animators. absurd horror animations, from creepy and unsetting to funny and weird.
videos on things he likes. if you want to impress your nerd friends, watch his "My Favorite Things" videos and send them stuff from it, since a lot of the time it'll be kind of obscure.
videos on the world of machine learning and AI. a grounded approach to it from someone actively working in the field.
bite sized content that analyzes specific things in video games, with some absurd (but fun) theorycrafting.
thorough retellings of modern science history with slick visuals. America's Missing Collider is peak content.
videos speculating on why various games didn't deliver, and the community reaction to it. these videos are hard to binge just cause there's only so many ways to tell the story of overhyped video games releasing as a pile of garbage, but the magic is there in the first few watches.
neat rimworld animations. no indication of more coming out, but the ones that are there are very good.
nostalgic video essays on stuff late millennials grew up with. comfy videos that get emotional from time to time.
my favorite video: Hello, Stranger: How As Told By Ginger Handled Abandonment. an example of an emotional video that really gets at how children's shows can connect with their audience in the moments they need it most.
video essay channel that I found through their music on neocities! there's some unique stuff and cool ideas on here.
a video essay channel with chill videos about some game shows and online media. the videos are kind of in the style of quinton reviews, with a lot of tangents and branching paths that may or may not come together. regardless, the videos are good, especially for losers like me who will click on any video about avgn or the nostalgia critic.
video essay channel with a small amount of quality content about unique things. have you ever heard of diskmags? there's a video about it and it's really cool and aesthetic.
peak ecology.
peak youtube poop. youtube poops but horror. start puffing, boy.
very nihilistic and pessimistic videos about art. I find his perspective interesting, but it can be grating to the optimistic.
urban exploration channel, known for the aesthetic dead mall series. my favorite series is Another Dirty Room, which, honestly, now that I'm thinking about it? would count as my favorite reality show.
series/challenge-based runescape youtuber, but his excitement is infectious. a great performance. makes you interested in an mmo you haven't played in years.
comedian who specialized in those rotoscoped joel haver-type animations. some hits, some misses. pretty creative.
smash bros melee player who has an infectious style. even though this is the only nascar content I watch, he makes me feel like I've always been interested in it.
nostalgia essayist with a fun style and informed perspectives. talks about a lot of odd and obscure shows, often giving the benefit of the doubt.
channel description describes it well, "weird stories and lesser-known genres..." Interesting minidocs about specific artists and movements.
A silly channel to make your friends take away your aux cord. this got me through college though.
like super eyepatch wolf, but only the part where you find cool games to show to your nerdy friends. they probably already know about Iron Pineapple, though. regardless, the "I played YET ANOTHER [X] Souls-Like games you've never heard of" series is still very entertaining.
minidocs about the more online things people would be nostalgic for. does a lot of digging through forums.
my favorite video: The History of Cool Math Games. she found mrs math games.
funny edited videos about things. I just wanted to mention this because you can tell he's touching grass from the direction the content's going.
the king of 3D aesthetic. some tutorials and essays about various things with slick and funny 3D editing. he has a video game called Kitten Burst.
my favorite video: The State Birds are Garbage: funny, intelligent, visually perfect with a clear call to action. one of my all time favorites.
a channel about speedrunning from a meta-perspective. instead of videos about speedrunning, it's videos about specific aspects of the culture of speedrunning. look, some of these videos are just funny. he does the defunctland thing but puts the "historical context" in the middle, and it's usually something jaw-dropping. it's absurd and I love it.
my favorite video: The Politics of Speedrunning: the "historical context" gets you so confused that you can't even focus on the rest of the video.
generically entertaining channel about lost media. dives into specific topics. we'll pretend like the mtv video doesn't exist.
entertaining sonic fan who does nostalgia videos, lately with a twist where he'll try to run games on old computers. if you had a computer in exactly 2000 these videos are for you and you will feel seen.
I couldn't play call of duty games for a while because I'd do stuff like this. just wandering around the far corners of the map and non completing the objective. "unremarkable and odd places" speaks to me in a way that's hard to describe. it's a very practical application of video game liminality.
one of the most influential channels on youtube in terms of editing style. all sorts of content about arcades, microwave food, weird stuff found on VHS tapes, etc. excellent content all around.
listicles about the cutting room floor-type content in video games. pretty entertaining and occassionally interesting.
a sort of nostalgia/lost media/horror channel that initially started off reading reddit posts but has since branched into other stuff. 50 Internet Oddities You Should Know About: Weird Internet Iceberg has shown that she is well-versed in online horror, with that video in particular having the most unique entries of any internet horror iceberg I've seen in an internet iceberg video iceberg. I just think it's neat.
powerhouse of a youtube channel. videos about technology in and around the home, describing how things work in such good layman's terms that you might even feel like taking stuff apart yourself. his photography videos are super interesting. he's very opinionated too, which makes it funny when he's wrong.
getting his start with horror video game iceberg videos, he's since pivoted toward exploring dead games, which meshes well with his dry sense of humor, as well being some of the most unique content out there.
deluxe rollercoaster tycoon 2 videos made by the only good dutch person. extremely detailed videos about everything you can think of. he'd have basically decompiled the game in videos by the time this project is done.
the most underrated channel on this list. high effort content on "bulk" topics, which is a term I just made up for videos like I Beat All 40 Call of Duty Campaigns on Veteran, where somebody does a lot of a thing. he's got a relatable writing style that I've grown to enjoy.
unique car reviews that take into account the sociocultural context in which the car was conceptualized and produced. the videos can be hit and miss, although they hit more than they miss. sometimes they feel like an ad if it's for a car that they're giving away.
my favorite video: 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser: Regular Car Reviews: this video more or less defines all that comes after it. an unassuming PT Cruiser review that explicitly analyzes the aforementioned contexts. one of my all time favorites.
juggernaut. releases those 5+ hour videos on nickelodeon shows, but don't ignore his earlier stuff. he's got great persectives, excellent presence, friendly vibe, and an excellent ear for tangents.
yeah that's right. I got into urbanism. I watched NJB until the drama. now I watch videos that make me hate my environment EVERY DAY. citynerd is a professional who does fun stuff with statistical databases to make listicles about what is statistically the best places to live for x and y. very bingeable. very dry humor.
super interesting videos by a lawyer. focused on video game culture beyond the realm of the usual suspects. very meticulous.
my favorite video: Why Aren't There Any Good Christian Games?: really gets into the meat of the issue. if you have experience with evangelicals then this will resonate with you.
an expansion of izzzyzzz type content, touching on even more internet at even greater lenghts.
guy with a background in climate science talking about economic factors behind climate change. usually regulatory capture or nefarious marketing driving government changes. pretty bleak. he's funny though and does talk about avenues for change.
queer little animations.
completely gobbled up the niche quinton reviews opened up years ago of talking about 00s tv shows and doing some research into the context of their production. good background noise.
well-paced minidocs with slick and visually stimulating editing. kind of just talks about whatever. usually has a philosophical bend to it.
former teacher who does political essays from that perspective, and some other stuff too. well-presented.
my favorite video:The Right-Wing War on Education. puts words into a lot of the feelings people have surrounding education, and asserts that it's all intentional and terrible.
cool music theory essays with a lot of them about video game soundtracks.
excellent videos about various things in technology. funny and well-edited with some dry humor. they tend to poke at sometimes systemic issues within the gaming and technology industries too.
neat low-stakes background noise about concepts in philosophy.
super interesting videos about asian history. it seems like that's been a more recent pivot but I only started watching since How Did a "THIRD" Korea Form?. these are documentaries that are done on the ground. it's really cool.
good background noise about lost media. typical lost media fare where they take finding Spongebob Season 7 Episode 12 German Dub very seriously but he's got good enthusiasm which makes a good watch and I just like keeping up with lost media.
very interesting videos about graphics processing best practices and examining graphics in existing games. editing is simple and funny, the humor is dry, and he is good at explaining things.
neat videos about ancient technology (90s-00s consumer electronics).
love this guy. just takes requests. stay subscribed and every once in a while you'll see a video game cover you'd never think could happen with a guy playing a violin.
up-and-coming video essayist that makes deep dives into histories of video game genres. very deep dives. diving so hard that there's no light until you come out the other side with knowledge of a history of something you never could have imagined being the way it is. there's kingdom hearts stuff too.
this is my favorite drama channel. you ever want to watch some guy with a niche interest meticulously tear down other people with that same interest? very dry, no humor at all, but meticulous and the novelty still gets to me. like who makes a tier list video and meticulously defines each tier? love this guy.
videos meticulously examining video game mechanics. good background noise and tons of useless information (in a good way).
another hugely underrated channel. at least it was a few months ago when I last checked. he's getting hella views now. anyway--very tightly scripted parody content. very clever writing. very funny videos.
my favorite video:I Watched All the Peanuts Specials You Didn't Know Existed. entertaining the whole way through.
very satisfying minidocs about various subjects. I say satisfying because I'm so used to these types of documentaries ending on unsatisfying "well who really knows" conclusions. he's got takes and he's makes them based on the evidence and you can make your own conclusions too if you want. good stuff.
long.
my favorite video:ACTION BUTTON REVIEWS DOOM: really makes you feel like a kid in the 90s with a friend who had a ibm compatible pc.
